HOW DOES IT WORK:

The laser light travels harmlessly through the epidermis and dermis until it strikes the hair follicle, which contains a dense, melanin-rich hair shaft and bulb. The dark-colored melanin absorbs the light and rises in temperature, destroying the hair-producing cells surrounding the follicle. Because the heat is not sustained, however, no damage occurs outside the follicle area.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Q: How often do I come in for a Laser Hair Removal treatment?
A: We recommend that our clients schedule their appointments every 4-6 weeks apart for best results.  We will not schedule appointments under 4 weeks apart.  After you have received 6-8 sessions, more treatments maybe needed until all the hair is removed.

Q: How many sessions do I need for permanent Laser Hair Removal?
A: The truth is, there is no magic number. Your body is unique. Your hair and skin color and texture combination is unique. Your hormones driving hair growth are unique.  In addition, the results vary for different areas. For example, Brazilian and arm pits considered as the toughest due to the hair density and hormone induced growth. Each person will require a customized approach to get the result you want.

Hair grows in cycles so when you go in for a treatment the laser is targeting the dark pigment of the hair follicles currently active in the growth cycle (the hair is alive, attached to the follicle and popped trough the skin). Some hair that appear on the surface maybe in the dying stage and not attached to the follicle anymore. Those follicles cannot be reached by laser until the new hair would grow again and pop trough the skin. Very approximately estimation would be about 70-80% of all actively grown follicles in the area. Those follicles will then shed the hair over the next 1-3 weeks. But wait! Additional follicles will then begin their growth cycle and those hairs will also need to be targeted in the next treatment session in 4-6 weeks.

Over time, with multiple treatments you will significantly reduce the number of hair producing follicles. Remember, laser hair removal is actually permanent hair reduction. So with multiple treatments you are permanently reducing the number of follicles producing hair. Each treatment will address the remaining follicles in their growth cycle for smooth and (nearly) hair free skin for the long term.

Additionally your body is a complex organism and is constantly changing. You may experience hormonal changes throughout your life that cause increased hair growth and so you may need follow-up treatments. Most patients do experience some fine re-growth after about a year and typically at least one treatment per year is necessary to really maintain those excellent results.  There is no laser that has received FDA clearance for a claim of permanent hair removal. However, diode 808nm/810nm  laser technology was cleared by the FDA for permanent hair reduction (which is defined by the FDA as 85% or greater hair reduction). It is possible that follicles in the treated area, while not being completely destroyed, will be sufficiently disabled to the point where they produce only fine, light hairs that do not respond to further treatment. This is backed up by extensive clinical studies and you should be wary of anyone who claims otherwise.

Q: Why all hairs cannot be removed in one session?                                                                                                                                                                             A: Because of the hair growth cycles. Lasers work by destroying hair roots which are active at the time of treatment, and which have enough pigment to absorb sufficient laser energy. The hair shafts in the treated hair follicles will fall out, or be "shed" 1-3 weeks after treatment.

wh

Anagen (Figure 1): This is the "perfect" stage for treatment. The hair is grown and it is visible above the skin and can be treated. The hair shaft is attached to the papilla, thus enabling the laser to attack the melanin in the shaft and disable the papilla. This period for facial and body hair can be as long as two to three weeks.

Catagen (Figure 2): the "perfect" stage for treatment has passed. The growth process has reversed itself and the hair is getting ready to shed (this is not the same shedding process as post-laser treatment). The moisture, water and salt have begun to dry up. It is still possible to treat with laser since a follicle treated in the Catagen stage will still produce another hair. This stage is remarkably variable and can be as little as two days.

Telogen (Figure 3): This is the final stage, the "resting" stage. The hair is neither developing nor growing. It can not be treated during this stage, as it usually is not visible above the skin. For laser treatment the hair shaft is fully detached from the papilla, thus not allowing the laser to attack the melanin in the shaft and disable the papilla. This unpredictable phase can be as short as a few days or as long as a few years.

The "perfect" time for hair to be permanently destroyed is when it is in the Anagen or growing stage. It can take 6 to 12 weeks for a hair to grow from the matrix, or papilla, to the surface of the skin. These cycles can vary somewhat from individual to individual, and render individual patterns that are vastly different

"Your commitment" to laser hair removal is very important! Hair can grow approximately ½ inch per month, but the hair on a woman's lip may reach only ¼ inch above the skin. This means the hair would be visible above the skin, in the Anagen stage, approximately 2 weeks. If appointments are missed, permanent hair removal can not be achieved as quickly since some of the hair will have begun to reach the shedding stage before treatment and therefore complete destruction of the papilla can not be achieved. Laser treatments are scheduled for 6 – 8 weeks apart to coincide with the Anagen cycle.

Please keep in mind that your laser technician is a dedicated professional who is eager to help you achieve your goal of permanent hair removal.

Q: Will my hair grow back?
A: No, it won’t. The treatment works to damage the hair follicle so that it cannot regrow new hair. But you may continue to grow new hairs from not damaged follicles that escaped due to the Catagen or Telogen growth stage (see the pictures above). Some peoplke have the excessive hair growth caused by: heredity, stress, medication, and hormonal changes. Women puberty, pregnancy and menopause play important parts in determining hair growth.  But don’t worry. You only need to be retreated to resolve this predicament.

Q: Who is not a candidate for a laser hair reduction:                                                                                                                                                                         A: There is no laser or laser-based method available today that works on grey, blonde or red hair. The effectiveness of laser hair removal is based on the melanin /pigmentation of the hair. The greater the amount of melanin, the better the results. White or gray hair does not contain any melanin and, therefore, does not respond to the treatments. However, some hair that many would call blonde or red actually does contain enough melanin to be treatable. That is precisely why we offer a complimentary consultation, so we can evaluate your hair and skin type and discuss your options.

Q: Which hair colors respond best to treatment?                                                                                                                                                                      A: Because lasers target the PIGMENT in hair roots, lasers work best on black or brown hair. Light brown or auburn hair may require more treatment sessions. White hair does not respond to treatment - so get your hair removed before you get old and your hair turns white!

Q: Do I need to take a leave at work for the treatment sessions?                                                                                                                                                      A:  We offer late evening hours and weekend appointments. Most of our clients can even sneak away on their lunch break. Fortunately for those who can’t afford to miss a day at work, weekend hours are available. Since our treatments are pain-free, you don’t need to undergo a recovery process. After the treatment, you can return to work right away.

Q: Will it hurt?
A: Our technology is generally pain free.  Most of our clients describe laser hair removal as a warm heat, tingling or, sometimes stinging sensation on the skin. Topical anesthetic is available to increase your comfort if you choose. Topical anesthetic numbimg cream can be applied in sensitive areas 15-20 minutes prior to service.  A decision to use topical numbimg cream is determined at your initial consultation visit. Some people find it helpful to take two or three plain Tylenol and/or Advil a couple of hours before coming in for treatment. Some women find that they are more sensitive during their menstrual cycles, however this would not prevent from treatment at other than bikini areas. Following your treatment, you may experience a sunburn-type sensation in the treated area for several hours.

Q: What do I need to do in preparation for my appointment?
A: We recommend that you lightly exfoliate and shave treatment areas the night before or morning of your appointment because the surface hair interferes with the laser treatment. If you do not shave, you may wax the treatment areas one week before your appointment. During laser treatments you cannot tweeze or wax the hair you want removed with laser. Bleaching, shaving, and depilatories can be used in between treatments if needed. It is the requirement of the Enlighten Tan & SPA medical director to wait a period of seven days pre and post treatment in the use of depilatories and/or bleaching agents. Please advise your technician if you are using bleach or depilatories in the area you are having treated with laser hair removal. For best treatment results and the safety of our clients we ask that our clients keep their skin as light as possible when having laser treatments. If you are planning on having sun exposure – real or artificial – we ask that you wear an SPF of 45 or greater and cover the area from exposure if possible. Clients that do not come prepared may be subject to an extra charge for preparation or may be declined service due to timing.  Please be prepared for your appointment to avoid complications.

Q: What areas of the body can be treated?                                                                                                                                                                                                A: All parts of the body can be treated. In women, the most common areas for treatment are upper lip, chin, bikini line, arms and legs, and underarms. In men, the most common areas for treatment are shoulders and back, and the beard area.

Q: Do you provide laser removal treatments for men?                                                                                                                                                                         A: Concern about body hair is a not just a woman’s issue. In fact, more and more men are looking for the clean, smooth, fresh looking skin.

A lot of men who want to take away that unibrow look. They want a shaping, they want the area around their ears or the back of the neck cleaned up as well. Laser hair removal can be done on all areas but the following areas are most popular among mail population:

FACE, NECK, BACK, CHEST, ABDOMEN, SHOULDERS, EARS, NOSE, HANDS, KNUCKLES, FEET.       Sorry - we do not offer bikini for man at this point.

Q: What is basic bikini, full bikini, exended bikini and brazilian?

Bikini Treatments:

Basic Bikini is a line of the hair exposed while wearing a swimsuit.

Full Bikini includes the option of shaping the top of the triangle & goes a little deeper into the sides.

Full bikini extended gives you the option of removing beyond the full bikini lines. It covers ONLY the front area.

The Brazilian gives the option of removing absolutely everything. All of the hair in front, back & in between                                                                                               is removed, leave a landing strip or bare it all.

Years ago, there may have been a stigma attached to removing all hair from one's pubic region, but that concept has since faded. Aesthetics are a major reason for choosing the Brazilian style, but guests often choose it for the sense of optimal personal hygiene as well. People of all ages, professions, lifestyles and marital statuses seek Brazilian laser hair removal for the smooth, beautiful results they can experience.

Q: How long before I see the results?                                                                                                                                                                                                         A: It takes a week or two for all of the hair in the treated area to fall out. After that, you will experience several weeks of no growth in the treated area. So you are actually receiving immediate gratification while you are moving toward your long-term goal.

Q: Can I be treated while taking medications?                                                                                                                                                                                       A: The only medications that are prohibited for Laser Hair Removal are Accutane and Retin-A, which must be discontinued prior to treatment. During your consultation, we will review any medications or supplements that you are currently taking to help determine the appropriate course for your treatment.

Q: I’m pregnant/planning on becoming pregnant. Can I still be treated?                                                                                                                                     A: Pregnancy restricts the use of topical anesthetics and may present some other challenges. While there is no evidence to suggest that pregnant women cannot be treated safely, it is our policy and the requirements of our medical director that no clients should be treated during the pregnancy. If you are planning on becoming pregnant please keep in mind that complete treatment may take anywhere between 30 to 42 weeks considering minimum 6 weeks between the sessions.

Q: What will happen after the treatment and what recommendations should I follow?

POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

Immediately after the treatments, there should be redness and bumps in the treatment area which may last a few hours and for some individuals (especially with light skin) longer. It is normal for the treated area to feel like a sunburn for a few hours with the possibility of the sunburn like sensation continuing into the next day. You should use a cold compress if needed. Aloe vera gel or antibiotic cream may be suggested as a post treatment product. Please consult with your technician prior to using any products in the treatment area up to 72 hours post procedure.

Hair re-growth occurs at different rates on different areas of the body. New hair growth will not occur for at least three weeks after the treatment. From 5-21 days after the treatment shedding of the burnt hair particle will occur. This is normal and hair quickly falls out. Initially it will appear as if the hair is continuing to grow, but this is the burnt hair pushing its way out of the follicle. You may help the hair exfoliate by washing and wiping gently with a washcloth. Showering/bathing is appropriate after laser sessions. However, be careful to use only tepid water and a mild soap. Skin should be patted dry and not rubbed. If having laser sessions on the underarms please wait a period of 24 hours before applying deodorant. Avoid hot tubs, pools, and public gyms 24 hours post treatment to limit exposure to harmful bacteria.

Avoid irritation in the treatment area, which includes picking or scratching. You CANNOT tweeze or wax the area you are having treated during the course of your laser sessions. Pure Mineral Makeup is the only makeup that is recommended immediately post treatment.Only use fresh new makeup in the treated area. Moisturizer is recommended to be used liberally in the treatment area in order for the dead hair to be able to exfoliate from the follicle more easily.

Q: What should I do if the need for medical care associated with the treatment arises?                                                                                                      A: We take your safety seriously. Our medical director Dr. Aubrey Copeland, M.D. has an extensive experience directing multiple Med SPA and laser clinics, including Rocky Mountain Laser College. He ensures our med spa treatments meet the highest professional standards by overseeing the treatment protocols, procedures and providing the training and tests to the med-spa practitioners. Dr. Aubrey Copeland is available to consult with any patients who need the advice before or after med-spa treatment or if the need for medical care arises.
